The Secret Storage Book -Steampunk Edition is a mechanical addition to my Ornate Book series, created for those who appreciate functional detail and hands-on assembly. While earlier designs focused on decorative embossing and hidden storage, this edition introduces moving parts and interactive mechanics inspired by classic steampunk design.

The cover features an arrangement of sculpted gears and a functional rack mechanism integrated directly into the front cover and spine. Three separate gears, a rack gear, and five printed screws must be assembled to complete the mechanism. Once installed, the gears turn smoothly, bringing the design to life with real mechanical movement rather than static ornamentation.

The rack gear functions as a sliding latch to keep the book closed. When engaged, the end of the rack gear slides into a dedicated slot in the raised section of the paper-style insert, securing the book closed.

Designed to blend naturally into a bookshelf or display, the book discreetly conceals a practical storage compartment inside while maintaining the look of a solid, decorative volume. The interior is ideal for storing small keepsakes, tools, jewelry, gaming accessories, or other personal items — making it both an interactive display piece and a functional hidden storage box.

MECHANICAL LATCH:

The internal paper-look storage box prints as a separate part and is fixed into the book cover using a couple of drops of glue. Both the cover and the insert include small sacrificial support tabs that are easily broken off after printing to ensure clean, support-free overhangs.

Assembly of the gear mechanism is required. All components are designed for support-free printing and straightforward installation using the included printed screws.

PRINTING RECOMMENDATIONS:

— Material: PLA

— Layer height: 0.15mm recommended (0.2mm optional)

— Perimeters: 2

— Infill: ~10%

— Supports: Not required

For best embossing quality, print the book standing upright.
A 5mm brim is recommended for bed adhesion.

For the box insert, I recommend to adding a modifier to the locking tab and increasing the number of perimeters to 4. This is not strictly needed, but will add additional strength to the locking tab. The included pre-made PrusaSlicer project file have this modifier already applied.

For the screws I recommend increasing the numbers of perimeters to 4, for better strength.

HINGES:

The print-in place hinges are designed with 0.3 mm clearance and may fuse slightly.
After printing, gently flex the cover to release them.

For extra durability:

Add a 4 mm tall modifier cylinder on the hinges

Set it to 4 perimeter layers (or 100% infill)

A pre-made PrusaSlicer project file are included with this modifier already applied.

CUSTOM BACK TEXT:

The back cover supports custom recessed text. Add your favorite book-title directly in the slicer!

In PrusaSlicer:

Add Text Modifier

Set to «Cut»

Depth: 1.2 mm

Select the desired font and adjust size and positioning

A ready-made text modifier is included in the .3mf files

Tip: If you plan to use the fully embossed book as a decorative desk-piece, rotate the book cover text so the text reads from top to bottom. This will ensure the text is the correct way up when the book is laying on the table.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:

Break off the two sacrificial support tabs from the book cover:

Break off the two sacrificial support tabs from the paper insert:

Carefully align the raised locking tab of the insert into the corresponding hole in the front cover. Ensure even clearance around the tab.

NB! Proper alignment is critical. Incorrect positioning may prevent the book from closing correctly. Always perform a dry-fit first.

Once satisfied with the alignment, apply glue to the bottom of the paper-like insert and keep the locking tab seated in the hole while the glue sets.

Assemble the gears according to the reference images using the five printed screws.
A flat-tipped screwdriver is recommended, though a small coin or similar can also be used.
NB! To avoid breakage — do not overtighten the screws!

Tip: If a screw loosens during operation, apply a small drop of glue to the screw from the inside of the front cover.
